Tokyo tourist tax

Staying in Tokyo, you pay the Tokyo Metropolitan accommodation tax (宿泊税): ¥100 to ¥200 per person per night, by price.

Coming change, 1 April 2027: The tax becomes 3% of the room charge per person per night, from ¥13,000, and also covers simple lodgings and minpaku.

      Worked examples

      Two adults, 3 nights from 15 October 2026, hotel or ryokan (licensed under the hotel business act), ¥24,000 a night:¥600.

      • ¥12,000 per person per night (room charge per person per night, excluding meals and consumption tax) → ¥100 per person per night.
      • 2 guests × 3 nights.

      A family of two adults and two children aged 7 and 15, 12 nights, same accommodation:¥0.

      • ¥6,000 per person per night (room charge per person per night, excluding meals and consumption tax) → ¥0 per person per night.
      • 4 guests × 12 nights.

      Exemptions

      • Stays under ¥10,000 per person per night (room only, before tax) are not taxed.
      • Minshuku, pensions and private lodging (minpaku) are not taxed until April 2027, unless licensed as a hotel or ryokan.

      Good to know

      • When several people share a room, the room charge is divided by the number of guests to find the band.

      How much is the tourist tax in Tokyo?
      ¥100 to ¥200 per person per night, by price, charged per person and per night, by price band (room charge per person per night, excluding meals and consumption tax). For two adults staying three nights in a hotel or ryokan (licensed under the hotel business act) at ¥24,000 a night, that is ¥600.
      Do children pay the tourist tax in Tokyo?
      The official source lists no age exemption: children pay like adults.
      Is there a maximum number of nights?
      There is no night cap: every night is taxed.
