Berlin tourist tax
Staying in Berlin, you pay the Berlin accommodation tax (Übernachtungsteuer, “City Tax”): 7.5% of the room price.
- ChildrenChildren are not exempt: the tax depends on the price or the number of rooms, not on who sleeps there.
- NightsThere is no night cap: every night is taxed.

7.5% of the price of the accommodation, excluding VAT, for every night.
In force since 1 January 2025.
Worked examples
Two adults, 3 nights from 15 October 2026, any paid short-term accommodation (hotel, hostel, holiday flat), €180.00 a night:€40.50.
- 7.5% of €540.00 (3 nights at €180.00).
A family of two adults and two children aged 7 and 15, 12 nights, same accommodation:€162.00.
- 7.5% of €2,160.00 (12 nights at €180.00).
Exemptions
- None for children. Since 2025 business trips are taxed too.
Good to know
- 7.5% of the price of the overnight stay, excluding VAT and other services such as breakfast.
- There is no longer a night cap: the old 21-night limit was abolished on 1 January 2025 (except for stays booked in writing before 1 April 2024).
